Military experience
I am Corporal Ian Ndung’u Waweru, a serving member of the Kenya Defence Forces with 12 years of continuous service since 2013. I began my career with basic military and infantry training where I gained a strong foundation in discipline, weapons handling, and tactical operations. Between 2015 and 2019 I served as an infantryman with specialized qualifications in Ranger, Paratrooper, and Signals training. During this period I participated in several operational and peacekeeping missions including counter-insurgency operations in Lamu County under Operation Amani Boni, stabilization efforts in Laikipia and Baringo under Operation Rejesha Utulivu, and two deployments to Somalia under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission (AUSSOM/AMISOM). These experiences honed my leadership, tactical, and communication skills in high-threat environments and multinational settings. In 2019 I transitioned into military legal operations serving first at the Western Command (WESTCOM) Legal Office where I established a regional legal registry system and supported civil and criminal matters across Western Kenya. Since 2021 I have been based at the Defence Headquarters Legal Department providing legal research, contract drafting and review, litigation support, and policy development for the Ministry of Defence. My work also involves training on Service Law and International Humanitarian Law as well as liaising with key stakeholders including the Judiciary and the Attorney General’s Office. I hold specialized training in advanced combat tactics, reconnaissance, survival, airborne operations, and tactical communications and I am a certified expert marksman on all KDF small arms and heavy weapons. Additionally I am trained in field medical response and First Aid through St. John’s Ambulance. Throughout my service I have demonstrated leadership by commanding tactical teams, coordinating multi-agency operations, and mentoring junior personnel. My dedication and performance have been recognized with the United Nations Peacekeeping Medal (2016), African Union Peacekeeping Medal (2018), and a Certificate of Recognition from the African Union Mission for contributions to peace and stability in Somalia. I take pride in being a disciplined, reliable, and adaptable soldier with a unique combination of operational and legal expertise. My service reflects a deep commitment to upholding the values of the Kenya Defence Forces and contributing to national and international peace, security, and justice.
